Refreshing Wines for Springtime Fun and Holiday Celebrations By Allison Nemir Robinson The clocks have jumped a head an hour, and tis the season for rebirth, refresh and renewal. April marks the month of Easter and a time of celebration for many of us; Sunday brunches; Family gatherings; and for us in the wine world, a time to enjoy a round of new releases. While the food of Fall and Winter harkens for the fuller bodied wines like Cabs, Zins and Red Blends; Springtime calls for Rose, Sauvignon Blanc, White Blends and lighter bodied Pinot Noirs and Syrahs. The longer, warmer days invite back yard gatherings, picnics in the park, mountain hikes, ocean or lakeside bike rides and wine can be the perfect compliment to these gatherings and activities. Here is a list of some wonderful, fresh, crisp Springtime and Easter wines that will pair perfectly with garden fresh foods; Sunday afternoon fetes; and Week-end activities: DeLoach 2014 Pinot Noir Rose $24: From the Russian River area of California this wine is shades of salmon in a glass, with a seductive aromatic notes of strawberry and rose petal. A soft, luscious palate of juicy raspberry, cherry and just a touch of citrusy orange peel lifted by a crisp, balanced acidity. JCB N° 5 2014 Pinot Noir Rose $28: Selected grapes for this wine are from Provence, France. Brilliant, rose-petal pink in color with purple nuances. The nose is delicate with scents of red berries, citrus and spicy white blossoms. Soft and delectable on the palate with floral notes and flavors of white fruit. Boasts remarkable balance and a fresh finish. JCB N° 69 Pinot Noir Rose Cremant $25: This sparkling wine from Burgundy has vibrant aromas of raspberry and red currant evolve into aromatic jammy notes. N° 69 is a seductively light and refreshing rosé. This wine is tender in the mouth with crisp flavors. Raymond Vineyards Napa Valley 2014 Meritage $24: Opening with exhilarating aromas of lychee nut, grapefruit and jasmine, this 2014 White Meritage is a well- balanced wine made in the style of a Bordeaux Blanc. An upfront creaminess is balanced with a bright acidity in the finish with flavors of passionfruit, minerality and a touch of floral rosemary upon the palate. DeLoach 2014 Russian River Pinot Gris $32: A natural, copper color in the glass, with a beautifully floral nose of jasmine and honeysuckle. This wine is tempting on the palate, flavors of fresh peach are balanced by low acidity. With medium body and a soft mouthfeel, this wine is refreshing and sure to be a favorite. Buena Vista 2014 North Coast Sauvignon Blanc $20: The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc is refreshingly clean with a bright, crisp acidity and well balanced flavor. Lemon, herbs and a touch of white pepper mingle upon the palate ending with a medium finish. JCB #16 White Bordeaux Blend $55:This Napa Valley blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes creates delightful aromas of lemon meringue, vanilla, fig leaf, and kiwi. This beautifully refreshing wine has flavors of honeydew melon and clementine. DeLoach 2013 Russian River Syrah $28: Richly colored with inviting aromas of pepper, licorice and espresso. This lovely wine has a dense core of dark fruit flavors, notes of black pepper and touches of leather and chocolate that impresses immediately, but expressively opens after a brief decant. Pairs nicely with Easter ham. These wines are exclusively from the Boisset Collection and available at winetahoe.com. A Sante, Cheers! Do you have a passion for wine? "You may have heard that the tradition of toasting originated out of a fear of poisoning- the idea being that clinking two glasses together would cause the liquid from both to spill into one another; thus, the people you’re drinking with wouldn’t poison you as they’d then be poisoning themselves. As interesting as this historical rumour is, not surprisingly, there is not a single shred of evidence backing up this conjecture."
